I am a huge fan of the business mantra – “What You Can Measure You Can Manage“.
This is especially important when it comes to patient retention and the dreaded “self discharge”.
Which is why I was so pleased to interview USA based health business expert and practice owner, Rafael Salazar, for this months Profit Club and Profit Club Academy training session – titled : “Retention and Engagement Strategies that Increase Profits and Clinical Outcomes“.
In this fantastic session Rafael lays out the exact process he uses with his practices and clients to ensure all patients complete their full schedule of care.
As Rafael says in his presentation, way too many health business owners are not tracking the number of patients who “self discharge”, compared to the number of clients who are actually discharged by the therapist.
You all know the story.
Mrs Jones comes in for her sprained wrist.
The team do a full assessment and schedule Mrs Jones for 2 sessions a week for 2 weeks – which should lead to a successful discharge at the end of the 2 week treatment program.
However, at the start of the second week of treatment, Mrs Jones’ cat gets run over, and she calls to cancel her remaining sessions to deal with the feline emergency.
Mrs Jones is then never heard from again.
Now I am sure many of you have detailed follow up call and communication systems in place to reach out to Mrs Jones to reschedule her final treatments.
However, in some clinics Mrs Jones is just another “self discharge“.
As Rafael mentions in his session you MUST have a system for measuring, identifying and following up with clients who have not completed their full course of care.
Some clinics even go to the extend of having a “Graduation Ceremony” (with cake, candles and a certificate) for patients who reach discharge.
I can tell you now, there is merit in the “ritualization” of the discharge process, but even more value in the fact we can now actually record and measure if each and every patient actually reaches this celebratory milestone.
