Great comment Paul,
I cannot agree more that the frontdesk is so important, yet often overlooked when we are focussed on our health practice and in particular our therapists and what they do.
Can you please help with the best way to handle, in terms of a receptionist script, a full appointment book when you cannot find a booking for a patient within a certain period of time (ie. 3 days, 1 week, 3 weeks etc) such as if during therapist leave periods or if therapist number not adequate for service demand. Much appreciated.

A couple of years ago while working for Paul with Get Active Physio i was doing seminars for sports clubs on injury prevention and to promote our clinic. I was presenting to a group of all the coaches and managers for a local junior soccer club. The issue was it was based inside a local bowling club where i was competing with the audiences continual movements to get another drink, the music from the square dancing next to us and the jackpot noises of the pokies going off in the room next door.

Overall not too bad they tolerated me for 15minutes and sent me a few patients through the season, it pays to stick with it.

Well, I was an honour student in biology and my supervisor asked me to take his 3rd year Climatology subject. He gave me the notes for the 3 Hr lecture late the night before and essentially slapped me on my back and said "good luck"... that should have been my first clue...
Well, after getting home I looked at the topic of the lecture - Cyclone Genesis, yep, I said the same thing.
Well, the lecture started the students where there, my brain was in park and so I started, as you do. About 90 minutes into the lecture (if you can call it that), I was no longer giving the lecture; the students and I where sitting around a circle on the floor all trying to work it out together...

You know what, they got it and they never forgot it. They had to get so involved in the whole 'lecture' and essentially worked it out for them selves.
So was it a bad lecture? Yes. Did it achieve it's aims? Absolutely.
Steve my supervisor did have to go over a few of the finer details, but all in all the students got it. And I learned heaps, especially about teaching.

Hi, I agree totally with this article. I am not sure if mine was a failure or I am worried that I failed. I started up my own part PT mobile outdoor business (solo i.e. just myself) and ran it succesffully for 1 year but now I have decided to quit doing this and concentrate on my day job which is a Legal Secretary five days a week. I loved my part time business and was happy that I succesffully had happy client's but I guess my failure was that I discontinued it. Although I am happy now that I can get 8 hours sleep and in turn are functioning and performing a lot better because of it mentally and physically, the big F word still lies there in the back of my mind.

Hey Paul,

Awesome post, mate. Failure is truly the greatest teacher, mentor and motivator. The best lessons come from huge failure. My worst so far was getting talked into advertising in a GP clinic on a TV an advertising company put into the GP clinic and then sold ad space. Cost me almost $3000 for a 2 year stint. Didn't get a single lead/client from that - and I was tracking it for performance. If you get the opportunity for a similar scheme - don't do it.

My biggest mistake was hiring a therapist from overseas without a face to face interview. He was rubbish with a chip on his shoulder the size of a planet. Just when I bought my second practice and needed him most. He stood there and tore up his contract in front of me and a patient, and said your contract means nothing to me. Instead of a months notice ,he gave me one week. After he left, business suprising improved. Then I got the kicker in my phone bill. An extra $400 where he had been phoning home at lunchtime at my expense!

Great post Paul, and a wonderful reminder that mistakes happen when you take risks, but without them, you cannot grow and move forward. I can relate to a few of your failures, and, in 11 years in the industry, have a few more of my own:-
- Buying a business from a "friend", & trusting that it was all above board
- Taking too long to fire non-performers and toxic staff
- Spending $2000 on a website that went nowhere
- Trusting a "mentor" who was there to "help" me, but who was using my business for his own financial gain.

Hi Paul, thanks for all the emails on how to be successful in the health business, and a business it surely is!

Just thought I'd post a short comment on your latest newsletter; I've been a health professional for over 20 years and a retail shop owner for the last nine. It's so true about action and non-action with regard to success. The last three years have been very tough in retail and yesterday I took the difficult decision to close my retail health food business due to substantial losses, and focus on my very successful Physio clinic in London.

In the last 24 hours three of my five associates in the London practice have increased their bookings as that's now where my focus is and I've started taking action to find larger premises.

As the saying goes, 'there is nothing to fear but fear itself' what's far worse is non-action from fear and of course, 'there is nothing more personally empowering than making a clear decision'.

Keep up with the inspiring emails, I do look forward to them.

Kind regards

Robert
